3 Questions to Ask Before Choosing Your Kid’s Mattress

One of the most important purchases you will make for your family is a mattress. With so many options available, it can be hard to choose which one is right for you and your kids. You want to make sure you are getting the best mattress for your kids, but how do you know what is right? It can be hard to choose a mattress that is safe and comfortable for your kids. There are so many options out there!

At Mattress Outlet, we get it! Here are three questions you should consider to make sure you choose the best kid’s mattress for your child.

#1 – How Old is Your Child?

The size mattress you choose depends on the age of your child. Crib mattresses are best for babies under two years of age. The most important thing to consider when choosing a crib mattress is the safety of your baby. A mattress that’s too soft could cause your baby to sink too deep into the mattress putting your baby at risk for SIDs (sudden infant death syndrome). A mattress that’s too firm with little or no give can be uncomfortable.

Crib and toddler mattresses generally measure 28” by 52”. When shopping for a crib mattress, it’s important that you buy the crib first and shop with the crib’s measurements to ensure the new mattress fits safely with no gaps.

Mattresses for “Big Kids”

Once you make the decision that your child is ready to transition to a “big kid” bed, you have more options for size. The most common next step is a Twin mattress which measures 38” x 75”. This size is usually adequate and your child can sleep quite comfortably. However, if your child is taller than average or you anticipate your child being tall based on family genetics, you might want to consider choosing a Twin XL. This would ensure that your child has plenty of growing room for years to come and prevent having to buy another mattress in just a few short years. Twin XL mattresses measure 38” x 80” giving plenty of room for extra height.

Another option for choosing a mattress for your older kids is considering a Full-size mattress. Full-size mattresses measure 54” by 75”. While the Full-size mattress is 5” shorter than a Twin XL, it allows your child to “spread out” or sleep at an angle in bed which they may find more comfortable. Having a wider bed may also be something to consider if you have a child that tosses and turns throughout the night. In a Full-size bed, they would be less prone to falling out of the bed as they are tossing and turning. As kids get older, having a Full-size mattress often makes them feel more “grown-up” – something all kids enjoy.

#2 – What is your budget?

You want to find the best mattress for your children, but you also want to make sure that it’s affordable. It can be a challenge to find a mattress that is still comfortable and supportive. You want to get them the best mattress that money can buy, but your kids are growing fast and you don’t want to spend too much either. Mattresses for kids can range in price from $100 to $1,000 so have a price in mind before shopping.

If you don’t have a budgeted amount that you must stick with, then you can focus more on other things, such as the brand of the mattress, the quality of the mattress, materials, or size, etc. But if you are on a tight budget, your first priority and main focus should be quality. Once you’ve decided on the best quality that fits your budget, choose the size of the new mattress. Don’t be tempted to buy the cheapest possible mattress. A good-quality mattress will last for years.

At Mattress Outlet we sell only the highest quality mattresses at prices that won’t break the bank! Our mattresses are made with high-quality materials and designed to last a lifetime. You’ll never have to replace your kid’s mattress again.

#3 – What Type of Mattress is Best for Your Kid?

When it comes to kids, you need the right mattress for them. Kids tend to be rougher on a bed than adults and mattresses can wear quicker due to their behavior. Mattress Outlet offers an array of choices for accommodating all types of sleepers at all different ages. The main types of mattresses are Innerspring, Foam, Organic, and Hybrid mattresses.

Innerspring Mattresses

A good choice for kid’s mattresses is an Innerspring mattress because of their longer lifespan when compared with other kinds. Innerspring mattresses have “coils” that change and adapt with your child’s body regardless of the weight and size of your child or their favorite sleeping position. If your child does a lot of tossing and turning, the innerspring coils help with motion isolation. With these, you’ll get the most affordable prices and peace of mind knowing that your child’s rest is not being sacrificed.

Foam Mattresses

Foam mattresses are just that – foam. Depending on the quality of the foam mattress, it can be made from one type of memory foam or several layers of foam which serve different purposes. When considering a foam mattress, check how many layers of foam the mattress has and the processing of the foam for harmful chemicals. These mattresses contour to your child’s body, don’t lose their support or sag making for a good night’s sleep.

Organic Mattresses

Maybe you’ve been wondering about the chemicals and pesticides used in mattress production and you’re concerned about how this can affect your children. If so, an Organic mattress might be best for your child.

Organic mattresses are made from premium materials like organic cotton, organic wool, and organic latex, which are harvested and processed without harmful chemicals so your child can experience a cleaner, healthier, safer sleep. Our mattresses give you peace of mind with a chemical-free product that is eco-friendly and animal friendly; while preventing your kids from breathing in harmful toxins while they sleep.

It is so important for your child to have a mattress that will grow with them and last for years. The truth is that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to mattresses.
